South Shore Speech, Language and Swallowing Disorders, PLLC is one of the most comprehensive speech therapy practices on Long Island. We offer the convenience of a large group practice, with daily and occasional weekend hours and prompt appointment scheduling. Our practice features state-of-the-art care for speech, language, swallowing, and voice disorders, and offers a variety of highly specialized techniques and procedures that utilize the latest in technology.

About The Owners

Mary S. Boghosian-Asofsky, MA, CCC-LSP/TSHH is the co-owner and clinical coordinator of the practice. Ms. Boghosian earned a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Hofstra University, (1994). Through the American Speech and Hearing Association, she holds the Certificate for Clinical Competence. Furthermore, she is permanently certified through the New York State Education Department as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped. Ms. Boghosian is also licensed through New York State as a Speech-Language Pathologist. As a speech-language pathologist, Ms. Boghosian had been dedicated towards the treatment of patients ranging from birth through geriatrics. Although she had worked with adults Ms. Boghosian has concentrated in the educational aspect of speech-pathology encompassing the treatment of motor speech disorders, articulation disorders, phonological disorders and language/learning disabilities. She plays a crucial role in South Shore Center for Speech, Language and Swallowing Disorders, LLP as she supervises other speech-language pathologists. Ms. Boghosian is also active in the evaluation process and treatment of children ranging from birth through three years of age. Furthermore, she is an Ongoing Service Coordinator through the Suffolk County Department of Health for children ages birth to 36 months. Furthermore, she is involved in the transition evaluation from early intervention to related services, (4410 evaluations), and represents the families by presenting the findings to the Committee on Preschool Education, (CPSE). Additionally, Ms. Boghosian is active in the initial evaluation process and ongoing treatment of children ranging from three to five years of age. She attends the initial CPSE meetings to establish the goals and frequency of therapies. Ms. Boghosian has attending many seminars and workshops to further her knowledge and skills so as to improve upon the care of her patients. She is involved as a supervisor for those who hold their master’s degree and are completing their clinical fellowship year, (CFY), in speech-language pathology. Additionally, she is directly involved in staff educational training for various disorders, therapies and strategies as well as subsequent policies and procedures. It should be noted that she is an active member of the Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association, (LISHA), and has held a position on the executive board as well as the conference committee. Ms. Boghosian is also an active member of the New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association, (NYSSHLA), and the American Speech and Hearing Association, (ASHA). Ms. Boghosian has been acknowledged for her services in rehabilitation relating to human communication sciences and disorders by receiving the Mimi Katzen Award – presented by the Long Island Speech-Language and Hearing Association, In recognition of unyielding commitment to the needs of individuals with speech, language and hearing impairments.

Steven M. Asofsky, MA, CCC-LSP/TSHH has been the chief administrator and managing partner of the practice since its inception in 1995. Mr. Asofsky earned a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Hofstra University, (1994). Through the American Speech and Hearing Association, he holds the Certificate for Clinical Competence. Furthermore, he is permanently certified through the New York State Education Department as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped. Mr. Asofsky is licensed through New York State as a Speech-Language Pathologist. As a speech-language pathologist, Mr. Asofsky has been dedicated towards the treatment of patients ranging from birth through geriatrics. In addition to providing services to school aged children, Mr. Asofsky is also active in the evaluation process and treatment of children ranging from birth through three years of age. He has a concentration in the medical aspect of speech-pathology encompassing the treatment of motor speech disorders as well as cleft palate, feeding/swallowing difficulties, voice disorders and other congenital syndromes and acquired neurogenetic disorders. He has developed programs for feeding disorders in school settings as well as nursing homes, outpatient rehabilitation and hospitals. He has performed modified barium swallow studies at a private radiology practice as well as hospital settings and has become certified in an FDA approved therapy for swallowing disorders, (Vital Stim), where he was recognized in the Advance for Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologist,(January 29, 2007 Vol. 17 No. 5), Dysphagia Treatment Benefits Patient. Furthermore, Mr. Asofsky is certified to perform Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing with Sensory Testing, (FEESST), from the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery Voice and Swallowing Center at Columbia University Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Mr. Asofsky is also certified in LSVT Loud for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and other related neurological disorders. Mr. Asofsky has treated patients in their homes through home healthcare agencies as well as in the nursing homes, outpatient rehabilitation centers and in hospitals. In addition to giving lectures on Dysphagia to various para-professionals as well as other medical personnel, Mr. Asofsky is an adjunct instructor at Hofstra University where he teaches the Dysphagia course, (Swallowing Disorders in Children and Adults), as well as the course on, Motor Speech Disorders. He is active as a supervisor for therapists who are in their clinical fellowship year, (CFY), for speech-language pathology as well as supervises numerous graduate students from various universities throughout the country. He assists in staff education training in order to further the therapists’ abilities to perform such skills. Mr. Asofsky is an active member of the Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association, (LISHA), as he holds a position on the executive board as the Private Practice Councilor for which he is responsible to assist families who have either questions relating to a potential disability, finding a provider and/or insurance questions as well as other professionals throughout Long Island with regard to other professionals, insurance and coding questions and/or mandated changes and guidelines to follow within the profession. In addition, Mr. Asofsky has also held positions on the conference committee for LISHA. He is further an active member of the New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association, (NYSSHLA), and the American Speech and Hearing Association, (ASHA), where he is active on the special interest divisions of: fluency and fluency disorders, gerontology, speech science and orofacial disorders as well as swallowing and swallowing disorders, (Dysphagia), and voice and voice disorders.
